About Fine Art
In European academic traditions, fine art is art developed primarily for aesthetics or beauty, distinguishing it from decorative art or applied art. It also has to serve some practical function, such as pottery or most metalwork. In the aesthetic theories developed in the Italian Renaissance, the highest art was that which allowed the full expression and display of the artist's imagination, unrestricted by any of the practical considerations involved in, say, making and decorating a teapot. It was also considered necessary that making the artwork did not involve dividing the work between different individuals with specialized skills, as might be required with a piece of furniture, for example. Even within the fine arts, there was a hierarchy of genres based on the amount of needed creative imagination, with history painting placed higher than still life.
I select artwork based on what is pleasing to my eye. I have specific artists that I follow and prefer certain genres. As rating artwork goes, Good refers to limited-edition prints, Resin sculptures,
Better would be signed and numbered - limited edition print or lithographs and vintage posters.
Best are the original paintings, and a gold mine would be any original work signed by a known and famous artist( original work, not a print or reproduced piece.
My most prized possession is a Tim Hinton " Limited Edition # 1" print. He was a starving artist when I met him twenty years ago; he is now a renowned world artist with both a studio and a school. Below is one of his most desired works.
