About Books and Book Collecting
There’s a difference between compulsively buying books and book collecting. There’s a difference between a personal library and a book collection. I’ve bought thousands of books but would consider only a very small portion to be collectors’ items.
Many people think book collecting is about buying rare first editions as an investment. However, book collecting is about buying books to satisfy a collecting goal. You may seek to buy every book by your favorite author, or collect all the books from a specific publisher, or collect all the books with dust jackets from a favorite artist. Collecting goals are infinite.
The fun way to collect books is by haunting used bookstores, garage sales, estate sales, friends of the library sales, charity shops, book fairs, conventions, and so on. The trouble with shopping in person is it’s all random.
You will also become obsessive-compulsive about old books in pristine shape. You will become a hater of people who mistreat books. You will start spending more and more money to horde books and protect them. And more than likely, when you die, your spouse will haul your collection down to Goodwill or Friends of the Library and give them away.

About Fine Art
In European academic traditions, fine art is art developed primarily for aesthetics or beauty, distinguishing it from decorative art or applied art, which also has to serve some practical function, such as pottery or most metalwork. In the aesthetic theories developed in the Italian Renaissance, the highest art was that which allowed the full expression and display of the artist's imagination, unrestricted by any of the practical considerations involved in, say, making and decorating a teapot. It was also considered important that making the artwork did not involve dividing the work between different individuals with specialized skills, as might be necessary with a piece of furniture, for example. Even within the fine arts, there was a hierarchy of genres based on the amount of creative imagination required, with history painting placed higher than still life.
I select art work based on what is pleasing to my eye. I have specific artist that I follow, and prefer certain genres. As rating art work goes, Good refers to limited - edition prints, and Resin sculptures,
Better would be signed and numbered - limited edition print or lithographs, and vintage posters.
Best are the original paintings, and a gold mine would be any original work signed by a known and/or famous artist( original work , not a print or reproduced piece.
My most prized possession is a Tim Hinton " limited Edition # 1" print. He was a starving artist when I met him twenty years ago, he is now a renowned world artist with both a studio and school. Below is one of his most desired works.
